HTW battery storage efficiency ranking sees BYD BatteryBox and inverter partners in top positions and verifies the system’s versatility
Shenzhen/Berlin, February 01, 2024 – BYD BatteryBox by BYD Co. Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rechargeable batteries, has been ranked among the most efficient energy storage systems in the evaluation by Berlin-based HTW (Berliner Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft) for the seventh consecutive time. Together with inverter partners such as Fronius, Kostal and Goodwe the BatteryBox system could secure 2 positions within the top 5 for the 5kW system test scenarios and 3 positions within the top 5 for the 10kW system test scenarios. Overall, the BYD BatteryBox was the most represented system with the leadership list. As the HTW team tested various application scenarios, this once again demonstrated the versatility of the BatteryBox system in combination with leading inverter solutions.
For 7 consecutive years the HTW “Stromspeicher-Inspektion” (energy storage inspection) has evaluated the efficiency of energy storage systems in combination with inverter solutions based on the System Performance Index (SPI). The SPI was developed at HTW Berlin and takes into account factors such as different energy conversion pathways, dynamic control losses and settling times. 20 energy storage systems have been tested in the 2024 evaluation.
The most efficient systems 2024
In the SPI 5kW test scenario the BYD BatteryBox HVS 7.7 in combination with a Fronius Primo GEN24 6.0 plus inverter could reach the highest efficiency of 92.6 %. In combination with a KOSTAL PLENTICORE plus G2 5.5 ranked the BYD BatteryBox HVS 7.7 was also ranked in second place with 92.3%.
In the SPI 10kW test scenario the BYD BatteryBox HVS systems could secure 3 positions within the top 5. Combined with a Fronius Primo GEN24 10.0 Plus the system achieved an efficiency of 95.4%, combined with a KOSTAL PLENTICORE plus G2 10 it achieved 94.9% and with a KOSTAL PLENTICORE BI G2 10/26 it reached 94.3%.
“We are very pleased to see that the BYD BatteryBox could secure so many spots within the different test scenarios and with different system combinations”, said Feng Jiang, Head of Residential, Storage System at BYD. “This once again demonstrated the versatility of the BatteryBox system, which can be used in a wide variety of applications scenarios. In additional to the storage systems modularity and flexibility the overall versatility is also achieved by the option to choose the best suited high-quality inverter from our trusted partners for each application case. We value the SPI tests by HTW as they provide an independent third-party guidance for system choices. We have participated in the SPI testing from the very beginning as we share HTW’s goal of providing transparency and test-based information to the market.”
Self-sufficiency of homes grows thanks to efficient energy storage
In addition to the general efficiency the HTW also examined how self-sufficient homes with PV systems and battery storage systems are. It can be observed that battery storage has a particularly strong influence on the degree of self-sufficiency of very energy-efficient households.
